Q: What mileage should I look for when buying a used Jeep Cherokee?
I am planning on taking a cross-country road trip this summer, and unfortunately the only thing holding me back is lack of a car to do so. I’m thinking about potentially getting a used Jeep Cherokee, but am unsure as to what mileage is good? If I want to get across the country and back, should I go for something that has less than 100,000 miles? I need help! Thanks

A: its not so much the mileage its whether or not it was abused and if it was maintained properly. check for records of oil and transmission fluid changes. i have seen jeep grand Cherokees go 250000 miles and i have seen a jeep Cherokee that is a mail jeep with 350000 miles come in my shop. its all about the maintenance. foreign cars preach it domestics dont unfortunately

Q: What should I look for when buying a used Jeep Grand Cherokee?
I am in the market for a used Grand Cherokee 1999-2001 the ones I have been looking at have between 100-130k miles. What questions should I ask and are there any specific things I should look for on the Jeep? Does a laredo have less problems than a limited? Which engine is more reliable and has less problems?

A: Look for something other than a Jeep, like an Acura MDX or a Ford Explorer :-)

In all seriousness though, transmissions in WJ’s (99-04 Grand Cherokees in enthusiast designation) go out in that range, as do differentials, transfer cases, and 4.7L H.O. engines. So the inline 6 will be much more reliable, and get slightly better mileage. This rules out the limited, as it comes standard with a 4.7, though not with the H.O. Oh, steering pumps get expensive too after a while, and figure 2 grand for a transfer case, three for a transmission, and you might get away with 1 for the diff. You will need to replace all three before you hit 150k miles – I have owned several of these vehicles, and regardless of how well I took care of them they all hit problems at the same point. Owning a Jeep is all about the adventure – and after the adventure, you might get to drive it some…seriously, mine have all spent over 25% of their service lives in shops, and all cost more than three times the original purchase price in maintenance (and I had Overlands, so that wasn’t cheap). When they ran, they were great, but that wasn’t often. If you still want one, get all the parts I mentioned inspected, listen for a humming or grinding when coasting as that indicates a bad differential, and listen for a humming when turning as that indicates a bad steering pump and possibly steering cooler. Oh, and one other nasty thing to watch out for – the rear wiper, when it goes, often bends and blows the motor – I have no idea why, but it costs like $250 for the part…

Oh, and my experiences were not all with the same mechanic, one of them I took to a dealer, one to a local chain, and the other to an independent shop. The independent shop was actually the best of the three, but it’s hit or miss with them, as Grand Cherokees have weird parts that a lot of mechanics don’t know how to work on (like aluminum differentials).

Q: Jeep Cherokee accessories for my used car to make it look good?
i am learning to drive, and i got a used 1998 Jeep Cherokee model SUV, and i was wondering if anyone could give me some links to a cheap but trustful places or sites that have good acessories, such as new seats, (NOT COVERS) and very good radios and suspension, and even lights to use off road? pleas and thank you lol

A: You should also consider that such a car may be expensive to insure. Check your insurance rates before buying one, for example here – carquotes.fateback.com

Q: Best value: a used Jeep Cherokee / Liberty or take advantage of employee pricing/incentives on Ford GM Mercury?
I was recdently laid off and LUCKILY found another job. Only problem is that I am making 1/3 less and need to lower my monthly car payments (currently around $450). I was looking at buying a used Jeep (looking for something sporty/suv”ish”) but wondered if I should look into the deals currently offered by Ford, GM and Mercury. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

A: If you live in the mountains or desert maybe a Jeep. Otherwise, anything but. They’re very unreliable.

Q: I want to buy a used Jeep Cherokee laredo. they seem abit cheap(less than $10,000) is it a good deal?
I am new to this country.I want to know if it is cheap to maintain, gas consumption and whether i will get value for money.. please advise.

A: They are not a fuel efficient, economical vehicle, averaging 14 city, 20 highway. The Laredo trim kit is just extra options that drive up the price, like power windows, etc. and not necessarily a great idea when they break down and require repair. A Sport model can do the same job for less money and require less maintenance on the luxury items.

You will get value for the money as they are no longer made and have depreciated in the used market. They are an excellent rough road/ off road vehicle, but not the best choice for urban commuting. Compared to much larger SUV’s, however, they do a good job.

Q: I’m sixteen and im looking for a decent used jeep cherokee. What would the price range be?

A: Good Choice, I have a ‘96 and I love it. These were made from ‘84 all the way to ‘02, so you have a wide range. After the ‘96 model year, they “redesigned” then, but really, they didn’t do much to them. People use this as an excuse to charge more for the ‘97-’02 models, so stay away from those. You’ll get ripped off. Also avoid the pre ‘87 cherokees b/c they used ancient carborator technology which is pretty much extinct today. A good ‘87-’96 cherokee will go anywhere from $1000 bucks to over $3000, it’s a very basic, plain vehicle. Unfortunatly, the $$ you will save on the initial cost of the car you will spend on gas, even the 4 cyls will never get over 20 mpg. So yeah, a stock, high mileage cherokee, probably $1000, if your going for the redneck look and you want a customized one with big tires, exhause, etc. it will run close to $3000-$4000.

If you prefer manuel, definatly go for it, the manuel transmissions are basiclly bulletproof, the autos have problems. If your planning on towing, go for the inline 6 engine, if not the 4 would do just fine. Good Luck!

Q: how much will it cost to buy a used jeep grand cherokee?
im looking to buy a car next summer and right now the 05′ used grand cherokees cost around 15,000. how much will it cost next summer, or will the price drop a lot?

A: Check the autotrader.com to see how much these cars are listed for. You can check 05 and 04 model years to get an idea. 15K sounds way too high for me. Last year I could have gotten a brand new Grand Cherokee for $21K

Q: I think I want to get a used Jeep Grand Cherokee?
I am a 16 year old girl and My dad is buying me a new car and my mom doesn’t want me to get a sporty fast car, but something reliable and something like a truck, Would a Jeep Grand Cherokee be a nice option? A 2007 or 2008 used Jeep Grand Cherokee. Can you give me a review and price of this car? Thanks! (:

A: Check your options. Grand Cherokee’s are not bad, however you’re not going to have a lot of people space in the back seats and the mpg is surprisingly bad. I’m guessing styling is one of the biggest things given your age, so something like a Land Rover is probably out of the question. However given the year’s you’re talking about, I’m guessing you don’t have a very tight budget so something such as a Volvo or Buick. They were thought of as “old people” cars for a while but they’re styling has become much sleeker

Q: I just purchased a used Jeep cherokee laredo wid 166,000 miles on it how much longer will it last?

A: A well maintained 4.0 will last 300,000 miles. Since you don’t know the vehicles past, you should start off on the right foot. Use Mobile1 Oil. Some people will tell you that it’s synthetic oil and will leak everywhere. That’s incorrect. I’ve used conventional oil and after I switched, there is a 130 degree DROP in my oil temperature! Cooler engines run better and longer. Regurally change the fuel and air filters. You’ll love the Cherokee!!! One other thing I might add. If it’s stock, put 235/75/15 tires on it! It will raise it up without having to put a lift kit on it. Tires are a little taller and a little wider than stock. Gives it a good look! ;)

Q: Are there any good used 1999 Jeep cherokee transfer cases in Vermont?
Automatic trans. Ours only has the part time 2wheel/4wheel drive option working. Is there another solution

A: try

http://car-part.com/

it is a search engine that checks junkyards.

Q: Can a newer-year Jeep Cherokee rear axle be used in 1989 model?
I have a 1989 Jeep Cherokee, all original major components. The rear axle is worn out, however, and I know I can swap out for a 1984-89 pulled from the junkyard, but will a 1990 or newer year Cherokee axle work too? Most used rear axles in the 84-89 are very high mileage, I’m just wondering if a used newer-model year Cherokee axle will be compatible.

A: Yes. Just make sure it has the same style mounting. A Cherokee should be leaf springs in the rear and a Grand Cherokee it linked. Get the right mounts!

Q: Is it worth it to buy a used jeep cherokee from the 90s?

A: If it is well maintained, and has decently low mileage for its age it will be a good little SUV. My sister bought her son a 2000 model last year with just under 50k miles on it, and the only problem so far has been a small water leak that turned into a cracked cylinder head, because he neglected to keep the water topped off or fix the leak. Luckily, we were able to rebuild the top end of the 6cyl, for just over $400. So they are reasonable as far as the cost of repair parts if something does fail. Maintain it well, and it will last as well as anything else out there.

Q: best year to buy a used Jeep Grand Cherokee?Which year from 2000-2006?
Im 17 and need a used car.. thanks!

A: anything from 02-04 would be a good choice, try and find one with low miles on it,there’s a lot of them around,so finding a low mileage one isn’t that hard, but they are good vehicles, and give very little problems, good luck on it.

Q: What year do airbags start in the jeep cherokee?
I am looking into buying a used jeep cherokee but I don’t know what year the air bags start in….Any help??
Thanks

A: 1995, 1997 for passenger side

Q: Intrested in buying a used 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4D Sport Utility?
My Uncle has one and when I sat in the seat it was like floating on air, but besides the seats being so comfortable I thought it was an overall good Jeep? Good buy or not?

A: I guess it’s personal opinion, but I looked at beautiful 2000 Limited, but the leather seats seemed very uncomfortable and looked really, really ugly. They don’t wear gracefully either. So I ended up buying a non-limited with cloth seats and love it.
