Q: What is the difference between a Jeep CJ7 and a Jeep Wrangler?
I am looking for a used Jeep Wrangler and my dad’s friend says he as a Jeep CJ7 for sale. I looked online and the CJ7 looks exactly like a Wrangler to me. Is there a difference or is it the same thing or what? Please help.

A: cj/7 s are older , there are alot of things that make them different, l;ike the size of them , where the turn lights are, the boxyness of the body, im not sure but i dont think they ever put fuel injection on the cj’s but dont qoute me on that, the tailgates are different, im trying to put a cj/7 tailgate on my yj, up until 97 the wrangler had square headlights, just alot of stuff like that, go with a wrangler, unless you arent to picky about the ride comfort. everyone knows jeeps arent the most comfortable ride but the cj’s are alot worse then the wrangler.

Q: Do you need the coil springs on an 86 CJ7?
Can you replace them using newer shock absorbers?

A: Springs hold up the body of the vehicle off the wheel axles and are needed regardless of the shock absorber type your car uses. Even a McPherson strut needs both the spring and shock cartridge installed as an integral unit. Shocks only dampen the body oscillations on the springs. They do not support the body of the car like the springs are designed to do. There are generally two types of springs, “coil” and “leaf”, although some vehicles use torsion bars for springs too.

Q: ‘84 CJ7 – Rear Pinion Seal – How do you get the seal off???
I don’t think the seal has ever been replaced. I took the pinion yoke off 2 1/2 years ago and haven’t been able to work on it since.

Problem is I can’t get the oil seal off. I’ve been through 3 screwdrivers and have used a dremmel to try to grind in slots for leverage.

I’m not even sure I should be removing this part as it is solid steel and the replacement oil seal is formed steel.

Any suggestions or input would be greatly appreciated!!!!
It has just about whooped my butt.

I’ve considered heating the housing but I afraid of starting a fire.

A: First get an assembly drawing of the rear end. dealers can get you one. Then make sure you are removing the seal and not material from the differential case , a washer, or something else. If all is well try using a slide hammer, you may have to improvise to get it to fit in the small holes you have already made. They usually come with two or three prong jaws, you can try using only one of the jaws alternating from one side of the seal to the opposite side of the seal. when inserting the new seal I always put some silicone sealant (gasket maker) on the outside of the seal about 1/32 inch thick ( just spread on a thin coat with your finger) then apply a high quality moly grease to the seal’s surface that will be doing the sealing (prevents the seal from being run dry at start up and failing. Then insert evenly into the diff case using a socket or pipe just slightly smaller than the seal diameter.

Q: Can you use a hard top from a Wrangler YJ on a 1982 Jeep CJ7?

A: Where is everybody getting this info that the CJ7 and the YJ are different lengths? The answer is yes you can swap them but the tailgate different so you might have to install the lifgat from a CJ7. Also the doors might need readjustment to line up properly. In the end measure everything. If it seems like too much work, don’t do it.

Q: What would cause a 82 CJ7 to die on hills?
My father rebuilt a 82 CJ7 years ago and used it to move trailers at our lake house. It sees very little use, and is only run for a few hours a year. Recently, its had problems running up hills. It will run fine on even ground, but any incline more then say 10 degrees will cause the engine to sputter and die. He’s gotten very frustrated with it and invested in a ATV to move trailers and told me if I fix it, I can have it. I’ve done some reasearching and the two things that seem mostly likely are a clogged cat converter and fuel problems. There is no cat converter on it, just headers, and we’ve completely replaced the carburetor (not remaned, or rebuilt, a completely new holly). Now I’m thinking sediment in the tank is clogging the hose, but thats my last guess. Its a two hour drive to the lake and to get parts is at least a hours drive so to save gas running back and forth to town, I’d like to know what other possibilities are for this problem. I’d like to test any possible solution in one day so anything that could cause this please speak up. The engine is a stock AMC 304.

One last question, would it be possible to pull the gas line from the fuel filter and drop it in a 5 gallon gasoline tank to test if its bad gas?
I highly doubt its the carb. The first one was still in good condition when this problem first started, but we replaced it just to be see. What are the odds of two carburetors causing the same problem? We didn’t cheap out either this is a BRAND NEW carburetor.

A: The first thing I thought of was sediment in the tank before I even read your question.

Check it out among your other checks. I’ve run across this same thing with a sitting CJ

Good Luck when you find it. This should be relatively simple. Just cover all your bases

step by step….

Q: whats the biggest lift i can get for my 1985 cj7?
i want to use it for mudding.

A: As big as you want!
Start with a spring over and shackle reversal for 5.5″ up front and 4″ in the rear. After that, you can install any size leaf spring lift you want. The average spring lift is 4″-6″, but you can have 9″ or 12″ custom arched.
The biggest problem is drive-line angle….the spring over will allow you to set the angle before you weld on the new perches.
GOOD LUCK!

Q: Is there a coil-over kit for a Jeep CJ7?
My Jeep starting leaning to the driver’s side some. After looking – My coil spring on that side is missing! Would a coil-over kit work? Couls I use it all around the Jeep? Is there any other way to fix this?

A: Black Diamond has/had a kit called the XCL I believe, that should work. Even if its for a YJ it should work for a CJ with perhaps only minor changes. Also, pick up an off road mag.. Peterson’s 4wheel and off road, Off Road, Four Wheeler, JP, etc…

You should find an ad in there for the coil over conversion kits.

Q: 1984 CJ7 4.2L 258 straight 6..changing from plastic valve cover to aluminum?
the website i had ordered the valve cover states that there needs to be a slight modification the the head and also says “two rocker arm bridges” need used. I have been told there is a stud that needs removed but I havent heard about any other hardware being needed. Jeep guru’s please help i need to do this now!

A: go to www.jeepforum.com/forum, there is a group of guys (my husband and his family are part of it) that are in the 258 section, they will be able to tell you more of what you will need to do, and what you will need to add or remove before installation. I dont know all the facts or information on this swap, my 258 already had an aluminum valve cover on it when i bought my jeep. I hope that helps and you find your answer

Good luck

Q: is this used jeep a good deal?
im looking at this jeep for 7000K is it a good deal? what should i watch out for? i plan to use it both on the road and off road i dont know that much about jeeps but i love the ourdoors any ideas is this is a good idea to get? thanks

81 Jeep CJ7: Registered with clean title and is built with everything you need to go out and play without going broke building it your self. This Jeep is road worthy and has done everything from Penrose trails to the Hammers and others in Moab. This CJ has 6 inches of total lift, steel corners, no front fenders, and a full roll cage that has been tested plenty. 3” Blackdiamond springs (spring under) with Dynatrac U-bolt flip kit front and back, 3” “L” bracket to frame body lift with boat-sided body, 304 V8 with Edlebrock intake and Howell Fuel injection, T176 4-speed manual transmission, Dana 300 transfer case with 4 to 1 low and clocking ring, Dana 44 front axle has Yukon Chrome-moly axles and 760-X U-joints with Warn Premium front hub conversion, Dana 44 rear axle with 4:10 gears and full Detroit lockers front and rear, disc brakes are on all four corners. Custom over the knuckle heim joint tie rod and drag link, 35X14.5/15R (5) SSR Interco tires are mounted to 15X12 (5) steel bead lock wheels. Warn XD9000i winch, Custom aluminum fuel cell, Tuffy lockable center console, up-graded blower motor (now you stay warm), 3” lap belts, front stinger, TLC lights, Rancho shocks, etc….. I just finished replacing all fluids, gear oils, axle bearings and races front and back and had a custom rear driveshaft built with new u-joints, new brakes front and rear, new Optima “red” battery and new alternator …….This jeep also comes with extra U-joints (axle and drive shafts) a spare rear driveshaft, bikini top, front tow hitch and Co2 tank for quick tire air-up or running air tools.

A: Sounds a little steep to me. Body Lifts are not good on CJ-7’s. They should have done a spring over and no body lift. No front fenders will make it illegal to drive on the streets. The AMC 304 engine has a lot or torque and the injection system is great, but those engines only last 60,000 miles on a good day. my 1979 CJ-7 has 86,000 miles on it and has blown up twice. It is in the middle of getting a sbc transplant.
CJ-7’s are GREAT Jeeps but they ride rough on the road. If you do buy it, look into a shackle reversal kit for the front, it will improve the ride quality. 4:10 gears will be fine on the street and the 4:1 T case kicks butt in the dirt. The SS tires are not good on the street, they get hot and blow out on long trips (experience taught me that one)
It seems to have a lot of bells and whistles that you could not replace for the price of the Jeep, but I would have it checked out by an off road shop before buying it.

Q: can you run a alternator off of a power steering pully?
i have a 1978 cj7 with a 304 v8 in it and i was wondering can you run a seprate second alt. off of the power steering pully and mount it where the airpump used to go i am planning on running a compleatly seprate system for my winch and off road lights

A: Yes … Thats an easy way to do it

Q: 1983 Jeep Wrangler CJ7?
One of my friends has 2 Jeep wranglers and is getting rid of his ‘83 CJ7 for 1000. It needs a fuel pump and a new battery. It has 95k miles on it and hes throwing in the hard and soft top with new wheels. Trans= auto. Should I get it? I need a car for every day use (to h.s and back) and occasional off roading.

A: a fuel pump and battery??? thats all it needs????? what are you waiting for?? thats a massive deal. I bought a 87 YJ for $1000 and I WISH all i had to replace was the fuel pump and battery, but those were the two smallest of my problems. If i were you, I’d snatch it up in a heart beat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Q: 1980 CJ7 Jeep back seat?
I was wondering is there a bracket or conversion kit that will make it possible to make the rear seat detachable and put back in easily like they have in some vans they have a bar that you can pull up and you can pull out the hole seat im looking for something like this for a CJ7 jeep so if I don’t have a lot of passages I can use it more like a truck and hull stuff do they have a product Im looking for if so were

A: This can be done, but you will need an old sliding seat from a junk yard and make sure it has the top and bottom sliders, you will have to hire a welder to cut your old brackets and mounts off of your seat and weld the sliders on the bottom of your jeep seat. Then drill the 4 holes to mount it in the jeep, pretty simple really.I have done something very similar so I know it can be done.
I am a welder and would charge about $100 bucks to do it if you removed the seat and I did the rest.
You have a great idea here! I do not know of any aftermarket item like this…you might be on to something here :-)
good luck!

Q: How much is my 81 cj7 jeep worth? Please need help quick?
I have a 1981 cj7 jeep its a 4×4 4 cyl. its in ok shape. It uses no oil, it has a bikini top and full soft top with it, the fuel gage don’t work and the wind shield wipers don’t work, The tires are good on it, and there is something wrong with the choke on it, it takes it a while to open up and start idling right but after it has warmed up its ok, It also has 109 thousand miles on it. Could you please help me out with how much this jeep would be worth if I was to buy it. And I live in Tennesse if that can hurt or help the price when buying. Thanks for your time.

A: Dear Zach,
My Great Uncle Laures used to own a CJ-7, but it was a 1984. But anyways. I did a little research and found that your car if in decent condition should be worth about $3,995, obviously if it has 109,000 miles on it, that would detract from the value a lot. And living in Tennessee hurts you, helps the seller, because prices of “investments” are more expensive their, notice the home prices in Brentwood, Tennessee, a town of 25,000 people, a median house is around $525,000, and in a town of 25,000 people, such as Galesburg, Illinois, an average house is $74,000. So you see it’s definitely a sellers market down there. I would ask no more than $2,900 to be fair. Thanks. Hope I was of service.

Sincerely,
Mr. Seth Dylan

Q: How does an auto mechanic dress?
I decided about a year ago to dress like the “avid outdoorsman” I am. So I threw away all my jeans and Macy*s clothes and have worn only zip-off nylon pants, cross training shoes, Teva sandals, button up rayon or polyester shirts, and nylon t-shirts. I look like I just got back or am just leaving on a hike ALL THE TIME.

Now, I’m beginning to pursue my passion for auto mechanics, though I still love backpacking, and wonder if I can combine the two or I’ll have to dress completely differently? I don’t want to be some sort of Nascar type, I’m not interested in auto racing. More about small 4X4’s like CJ7 and Scout 800, classic cruisers like the ‘64 Lincoln Continental, and making good use of Japanese cars.

Of course I know you need more than the right clothes to be an auto mechanic and builder. But the scope of this question is limited to just that specific area, please.
Rogodogo, are you saying you don’t like auto mechanics for some reason, and they’re all lazy or drunks and don’t like their jobs? Please enlighten me, since I don’t drink and don’t plan to be lazy.

A: The two most important criteria for garage clothing are SAFETY and DURABILITY. Save the nylon for the trails.

First, invest in Steel-Toe (ANSI 75 or above rated) ankle height boots. Many, such as Cat Deisel, Wolverine, or, believe it or not, Sears, look remarkably similar to hiking boots, and are very comfortable.

Dickies, and, believe it or not (I know), Sears have very durable work clothes.Long pants only, short or long sleeve button shirts(your choice, but long sleeves mean clean arms), in a cotton/poly blend. Make sure you stay away from Khaki. Dark colors hide a multitude of stains, which makes the clothes reusable between washings.

Lastly, invest in safety glasses, hand cleaner (and/or Mechanic’s Gloves), good quality shop rags, and an adjustable back brace.

Oh, and tools.

Q: What are the obvious factory defects of a 78′ CJ7 w/304-3-spd and hardtop w/full-steel doors?
The body-bucket has multiple rust-throughs but the frame seems solid. The drive-train seems o.k. from the appearence of it and every thing turns freely. The owner says it was used to cross flooded creeks with water over the hood at rare times. It’s all stock other than taller rims and tires. He’s selling ’cause the engine wire-loom melted into a pool of blackness. It is promised to run strong and tight but-beyond checking the obvious things like compression, brakes and clutch-; What should I be especially looking at?

A: id say its pretty safe since there is no computer to get ruined from the water when i bought mine the wire harness was like a rats nest and some wires were melted so i went on to eBay and bought a wiring harness for 189 and it works very well but i would go for it they are starting to get rare and those 304 are awesome engines. i drive mine hard and i would say 10mpg city and have yet to have it on the highway but its good for picking up chicks haha
