Q: can you fit a Chevy engine in a 66 or 67 Pontiac GTO?
I know that the GTO came with a 400 cid V8…for 66 and 67 but can a 455 cid V-8 in there..what about the Chevy 427 or Aftermarket GM Performance parts 502 cid v8 or 540….can a supercharger fit under there, too?

A: yes you can actually put any gm motor in that car you want to ,they make mount kits now for all engines, and there’s no limit as to what that car can have in it.those cars had a lot of room in under the hood, and would hold a good sized gm engine,a 454 would fit in that one real easy.its been done a lot ,even a 502 would fit it, seen that done not long ago, good luck on it.

Q: How much would a ‘67 GTO cost?
Back in the day, my dad owned a ‘67 GTO. He’s was so proud of it, as you might imagine. But in ‘74 he sold it for $300 because we we’re going over seas and he didn’t want to bother with storage. Just wondering, but if he had kept it, (and he’s real good about taking care of his stuff), what do you think it would be worth today?

A: I’m here to tell you, I own an automotive restoration business, and the 67 GTO is the top selling and recognized Pontiac’s. If it was a 400 4 speed, completely restored 25-35 th. Off the frame 4 speed 400 with the deuce with the proper interior (bucket seats, full center conceal) top 40 th. convertible, whole different conversation, muscle cars fluctuate with rag tops, some people love them some feel they loose there appeal. Automatic cars shave about 2-3 th. as well as if the engine is not the proper displacement (size). And as I’m sure he would tell you there hell of fun to drive. Hope this helps, These are the prices I make on these cars.

Q: Is it possible to do a full color change on a 67 Pontiac GTO?
I’m really into the ‘67 and ‘68 convertible models. The ones I’ve looked into are red and black, but I would love to get it painted a dark metallic blue with white racing stripes. Is it possible to do such a huge paint change?

A: Of course. im huge in the restorations and its easy on our older cars. It usually requires alot of work if you want a flawless show job. Taking the fenders and doors off to paint the doorjams, under the mirrors and door handles, etc. But it is ALOT easier to start with a nice straight car so body work is at a minumum

Q: what is the value of this 67 gto?
it has a rebuilt numbers matching 400 engine with a 4 speed transmission. the paint is nice but not perfect. it has a flawless white interior with power windows and factory air. by the way, it is a hardtop. the car is in overall almost perfect condition
so would 32k be a good price from a dealer?

A: Yeah, I guess he would buy it for around $20K. In the NADA guide with the four speed and the 400 engine that’s the low retail. Average is $38K and high retail is $68K. There are a lot of options there that could make it worth even more. Go to http://wwwnadaguides.com , click on classic cars and then collectibles. When you get the 67 GTO pick the model and options that match yours for a more accurate value.

Q: I am painting a 67 GTO Red and Black two toned. what do i paint the jams?
I am painting a 67 GTO Red and Black two toned. what do i paint the door jams?
Option one: Continue the strip in the door jam.
Option two: sprany the entire jam black and take the red to the edge where the metal wraps around.?
Hury hury I’m painting the jams today!!!!

all black jams look like the were a after thought..
it is what people do with spray can paint jobs

Q: I have 67 gto I can’t get it to idle. What can I do to fix this?
I put a new cam in it…

A: Ok, You didn’t really give us any info to go off of.

Theres alot that could have went wrong during cam install
cam timing (not lining up the marks in right place on top and bottom timing chain gears)
ign. timing off,
spark plug wires put on in wrong order
vac leak at intake
vac hose you forgot to put on

So lets look over all of that and say you installed everything right.

What size cam did you install? Is it a larger aftermarket cam?

If so, the prob is your tuning..

To make a big cam run right, you need to re tune engine.

It’s best to have a dizzy with vac advance.

Hook vac advance up to full vac port on carb or intake.

Add in as much timing as you can get at idle. Rather than going by the stock 2, 4, 6 degree timing… Set it at 10, 12, 14, or 16 degrees BTDC.

Now adjust your carb’s idle speed screw up till it idles fast (like 1200 rpm or so) **This is for tuning only**

Now hook a vac gauge up to full vac, and turn each of your idle air mixture screws in/out till you get the highest reading on the vac gauge.. Do each screw this away..

Now back the idle speed adjustment down to sety idle speed..

Depending on duration and LSA of cam your idle speed may need to be anywhere between 700 rpm and 1100 rpm to keep it idling, maybe even higher if you have an auto transmission and stock stall torque converter.

I had one camaro come into the shop that had a stock engine that he put a 296* cam in just cause he wanted the “race car idle” and because of cam size and stock stall converter, idle speed had to be at 1600 rpm in park, then when placed in drive it would kick the rpm down to 600.. Any lower than 1600 in park, it would die when placed in drive.. A looser 2600 rpm stall torque converter fixed that prob and help’ed the over camm’ed engine to run alittle better at lower rpms

Q: what will make this engine have power?its a gto 67?
Hi…..um i have a GTO 1967 400/6.6L engine….and i am willing to spen a few thousend on that engine to make it run fast….what can i do to it?…..

were is the best place to invert money into the engine to have more torque and HP?

A: That is very open ended question. To give you the best answer we need more information.
1. What all does it have now?
2. How much do you have to spend?
3. Is the current motor in good condition?
4. Is it a factory car that major modifications will hurt it’s value?

Without knowing anymore than what you posted, here is the basics.

A good intake, carburetor, and air cleaner to get the air and fuel in. Then a good set of headers and a quality dual exhaust to get the spent gases out. This would also be helped by a good ignition system to light the mixture. Above these a good set of aftermarket heads will do wonders. If you do not know much or have friends that can help I would recommend a system such as buying all of Edelbrock’s performer package so all the parts are matched and designed to work together. If you just put random parts together it can have less usable power than what you started out with. I would suggest you start buying and reading various car magazines, one in particular is Pontiac enthusiast to learn as much as you can about how all these parts work and be able to do the work yourself so that budget goes as far as possible.

Q: how to replace a rear quaterpanel patch on 67 gto?

A: Short of replacing the entire quarter panel, if the hole goes right through the metal, the best bet is to cut away all corroded edges, then fit a thin piece of sheet steel to the back of the hold and spot weld it into the place. Then from the outside fill the patch with bondo or some other compound and sand to match the contours of the original quarter panel. Then prime and paint the entire quarter panel.

Q: would a 67 GTO steering wheel fit a 67 firebird?

A: arent the steering wheel a simple bolt on? if so i dont see why not as long as it bolts in and doesnt have assload of free play.. or are you talking about the whole steering coloum?

Q: I just accidentally backed over my husband’s johnson with a 67 GTO. Should I get neosporin ?
maybe a bandaid ?
Its for the car of course ….

A: Pour a full bottle of peroxide on his snaggled bits. He will thank you.

Q: Any ideas on how i can make a GTO birthday cake?? Please Help!?
So my boyfriends 18th birthday is next friday and i want to make a cake that he will always remember…a GTO cake…a 67 GTO…i’m not sure how to do it though. Any ideas? Anything will help at this point.
Thanks for the help!

Kerry
i do want to make it myself…i love to bake…i have made a pair of life size skis with boots out of cake…but i can’t seem to wrap my head around this and making it…help…

A: Bake a square sheet cake for the body and cupcakes for the tires. You will have to cut the sheet cake into the shape of a car and then decorate it to look like the car you want.

Q: engine for a 67 GTO?
400 or 455? Has anyone used any of the aftermarket strocker kits?

A: Since GTO’s have achieved a high collector car status, I would stick with the 400 that came with your car assuming you have it. If you don’t and have to buy a core engine to rebuild I’d go with 455. Externally they are not distinguishable from each other. While stroker kits available today are of excellent quality, you don’t need one. Even with the 400 my 67 GTO would melt rubber across the intersection. In a street race, the ability to hook-up the tires and go is more important than melting them. I’ve beat dozens of supposed 12 sec. cars on the street with my 15 sec. car because they were spinning their tires while I was driving away from them. The more horsepower you have the more you’ll have to spend on the chassis of your car in order to gain traction enough to utilize your horsepower. Further, GM “A” bodies (GTO, Chevelles, etc.) have a stock rear suspension that is not very good at transferring horsepower to the pavement.

Q: I have a 67 gto with 400 engine want is the best specs for rebuild ? pistons, headers, ect. thanks?

A: Wow dude….great car but that question is like saying “who is the prettiest girl in the world”… it’s all in the taste. It depends on what you are wanting. A streetable every day car? Weekend Warrior car? I am going to assume that you want an every day car. I would keep the compression down….MAYBE go 9:1 with a light dome. A mild RV type cam to keep vacuum and idle fine for everyday use.

Clean up the heads… port and polish them… go with an Edelbrock performer set up….most performance with least mess.

I would recommend “shorty” headers for A bodies. The normal full length headers tend to be the lowest thing on hte front end and will drag on speed bumps and what not.

You should lower the front end about 4″ to give the car a good rake. Get disc brake spindles and set up. You can find them relatively cheap on Ebay….and worth the trouble. Also a power steering setup.

Just a few ideas from someone who has built his share of Chevelles over the past few years

Q: I want to learn about the 101 of automotive engines. Drag race performance, for my 67′ GTO.?
Hello everyone out there in the automotive world. Im 16, dad gave me his prized possession of a 1967 Pontiac GTO. Im so stoked on it and have been wanting to have a project car for a while. The body work and interior is all being done by body shops and other professionals like that. My problem is working with my engine. Its beautiful and sounds like a BEAST, but i want to learn more about it, and frankly its a lot. i get the main concept of how motors run and what a carb. is and fuel injectors, but like i want to sup this babby up!! put some performance parts on her. people say the easiest way to learn is by taking your car apart and putting it back to gether.! Bull Shi+. You dont know the names and what they do! so people i want a real answer. something that will help me.

(maybe study it?? take class at community college?)
i dono you tell me!

LOVE THE 4oo HP!

A: Google, my young car friend. It’s the best thing that there is, when you want to learn about cars. Search anything and everything you can think of.

My first step, if I were you, is to head over to Wikipedia. Start by searching for the terms you mentioned. Carburetor, fuel injection, etc. Read everything you see on the page, then follow any extra links they provide. If you want a more visual understanding, try howstuffworks.com. Excellent website for explaining things.

And actually, it’s not BS to yank apart a car and put it back together. That’s one of the fastest ways I’ve learned.

I went out, bought a cheap A$$ camaro for $500. Bought the shop manual for it, and stripped it down to it’s shell. Sold the parts, made about $1000, and when I work on my current Camaro, it’s a piece of cake, because I’ve already had my hands on all the parts. Sure, I didn’t know the names to start with, but when you’re under a car, having some random thing hit you in the head, you find out real fast what it’s called, what it does, why you need it, and how to remove/install it.

If your engine runs right now, I wouldn’t recommend taking it apart though. Swing over to Jegs, Jcwhitney, or Summit Racing. Punch in your year car and engine model, and browse through their performance packages. You should be able to find intake manifold/carb/header combos. That’s what I did for my 1971 Mustang.

Good luck!

Q: whats faster 67 nova or a 67 gto?

A: The Nova is lighter….but it all depends on how powerful the engine is, how good the suspension is, and how accurate the transmission is…The average GTO came with a 289 cid V-8…then came the 400 cid V8…The Nova possibly came with a 302….maybe a 350 but if the GTO is stuffed with the 455 cid V8 and the Nova has a 454….it would be up to who is the better driver…add in superchargers and Nitrous…it could be a drag race fit for a Pro Stock racing track…both are GM products..so the 502 and 540 cid V-8’s could be available to both…not enough information to name a winner….should have chose as Chevelle..a better competitor..for a Goat…same size and same level of performance.
