Q: How much are dealers making on a new and used car sale?
I am trying to figure out the lowest price that any dealer can sell a car for. Every time I want to buy a car a dealer goes below sticker price saying that they are loosing money on a sale but are willing to sell anyways. What kind of bullshit is this? I am preety sure they buy it from factory for something around 30% of a price on window. I just need someone that maybe worked for a dealership knows what is going on by answering this question.

A: The average mark up on a used Chevy is $4000. The average target profit is around $1200. We will try to sell you the add ons to juice you for the entire $4000 if we can’t get you to pay the entire $4000 spread with out the add ons.

New cars profits used to be $250, but it has been a while and I sold Used Chevy’s in Dallas off I-635.
New cARS sales employ a lot of tricks to get you to think that you are only paying invoice.The invoice might be real, but there are several “reserves” or “commissions” that are guaranteed to the dealer by the factory to get to this. Only a few people are ever able to negotiate or to “dig” into this profit centre in an effort to get a good deal.

Do not buy the extended warranty. Dump the car in four years.

Q: question about a contract for a privated used car sale?
So I’m am talking to this guy about buying a car and he came up with the agreement for me to pay monthly a certain amount. I found this contract online but don’t know if i would need a lawyer, as i do not have the money. A: Print 2 identical copies.

Take them to Kinkos or your local bank – you need to find a notary and these places almost always have one.

Sign the contracts in front of the notary, and have him/her notarize the contracts.

You keep a copy, the seller keeps a copy.

As a side note, if you are doing this, I STRONGLY discourage making payments unless you get title in your hands. The title would be transferred to your name, with the seller listed as a lienholder. ALWAYS get a receipt for every payment, even if you have to write it on a McDonalds napkin. Never pay a dime unless you get a receipt. Once the full amount of the loan has been paid, the seller signs a lien release, and the car is yours. If the seller will not put the title in your name with him as the lien holder, be very suspicious.

Right now, too many people are selling cars on payments, and they have a loan against the car. You take the car, start making payments, then one day the repo man shows up> If the seller doesnt pay the note, you lose the car and the money you paid. So be very very careful about any arrangement where you do not get the title in hand, with the seller as a lien holder.

Q: Why would a used car for sale by a private owner be missing an inspection sticker?
We are looking for a used car under $2,000, many we have seen have the plates and or inspection stickers removed. What does this mean? Did it fail, should we not even consider a car like this?

A: I can see why a license plates would be missin, I take them off when I sell a vehicle myself now. The past experience being someone will continue to drive the vehicle they bought from you with your lic plates as long as they are valid…..through tow booths without paying, through traffic cameras monitoring speed or red light runners, etc. then you as the lic. plate owner gets a letter for the fine. Big hassel. The only reason (as a seller of vehicles) a state inspection sticker would benifit being removed is if it has a lot of year left on the validation and you want to put it on another car to make it look legal (even this is not legal). Then its a full year before it gets rechecked and less likely to come back on the seller if the emissions doesnt pass. You and the authorities dont know the sticker is invalid for THAT car unless the authorities try to run the bar code or number with the states reference. (some states do put the license number on the state inspection sticker….could be a reason these are missing also).

Q: Can a used car dealership sale me a car without the title?
I bought a car 4 months ago and have been unable to purchase tags for the car because the dealership does not have the title. The night that he sold me car he told me to pick up the title the next day. Each month that I go to pay my car note he reissue me paper tags and new bill of sales. I have been pulled over several times by the police and I am looking suspicious like I am the one doing wrong I was told I would be ticketed if I was pulled over again. What are my rights and what can I do about this?

A: I would tell him either present a title or take the car back and refund my money. If he doesn’t have a clear title the car is not his to sell.

Q: Is it a big concern if a used car for sale has a new transmission?
My wife and I found a 2001Honda Odyssey with 91,000 miles. Everything sounds fine but it has a new transmission. Is that a red flag?

A: You probably should question the owner, about why the transmission went out….

Could have been a bad trans…

could be they towed a 50 foot sailboat with it….

could be they let their 16 year old drive it….

Either of the last two..would be a red flag to me…..
