Used Jeep CJ7

Great article and read about: Used Jeep CJ7 For Sale

Q: What is the difference between a Jeep CJ7 and a Jeep Wrangler?
I am looking for a used Jeep Wrangler and my dad's friend says he as a Jeep CJ7 for sale. I looked online and the CJ7 looks exactly like a Wrangler to me. Is there a difference or is it the same thing or what? Please help.

A: cj/7 s are older , there are alot of things that make them different, l;ike the size of them , where the turn lights are, the boxyness of the body, im not sure but i dont think they ever put fuel injection on the cj's but dont qoute me on that, the tailgates are different, im trying to put a cj/7 tailgate on my yj, up until 97 the wrangler had square headlights, just alot of stuff like that, go with a wrangler, unless you arent to picky about the ride comfort. everyone knows jeeps arent the most comfortable ride but the cj's are alot worse then the wrangler.

Q: is this used jeep a good deal?
im looking at this jeep for 7000K is it a good deal? what should i watch out for? i plan to use it both on the road and off road i dont know that much about jeeps but i love the ourdoors any ideas is this is a good idea to get? thanks

81 Jeep CJ7: Registered with clean title and is built with everything you need to go out and play without going broke building it your self. This Jeep is road worthy and has done everything from Penrose trails to the Hammers and others in Moab. This CJ has 6 inches of total lift, steel corners, no front fenders, and a full roll cage that has been tested plenty. 3” Blackdiamond springs (spring under) with Dynatrac U-bolt flip kit front and back, 3” “L” bracket to frame body lift with boat-sided body, 304 V8 with Edlebrock intake and Howell Fuel injection, T176 4-speed manual transmission, Dana 300 transfer case with 4 to 1 low and clocking ring, Dana 44 front axle has Yukon Chrome-moly axles and 760-X U-joints with Warn Premium front hub conversion, Dana 44 rear axle with 4:10 gears and full Detroit lockers front and rear, disc brakes are on all four corners. Custom over the knuckle heim joint tie rod and drag link, 35X14.5/15R (5) SSR Interco tires are mounted to 15X12 (5) steel bead lock wheels. Warn XD9000i winch, Custom aluminum fuel cell, Tuffy lockable center console, up-graded blower motor (now you stay warm), 3” lap belts, front stinger, TLC lights, Rancho shocks, etc….. I just finished replacing all fluids, gear oils, axle bearings and races front and back and had a custom rear driveshaft built with new u-joints, new brakes front and rear, new Optima “red” battery and new alternator …….This jeep also comes with extra U-joints (axle and drive shafts) a spare rear driveshaft, bikini top, front tow hitch and Co2 tank for quick tire air-up or running air tools.

A: Sounds a little steep to me. Body Lifts are not good on CJ-7's. They should have done a spring over and no body lift. No front fenders will make it illegal to drive on the streets. The AMC 304 engine has a lot or torque and the injection system is great, but those engines only last 60,000 miles on a good day. my 1979 CJ-7 has 86,000 miles on it and has blown up twice. It is in the middle of getting a sbc transplant.
CJ-7's are GREAT Jeeps but they ride rough on the road. If you do buy it, look into a shackle reversal kit for the front, it will improve the ride quality. 4:10 gears will be fine on the street and the 4:1 T case kicks butt in the dirt. The SS tires are not good on the street, they get hot and blow out on long trips (experience taught me that one)
It seems to have a lot of bells and whistles that you could not replace for the price of the Jeep, but I would have it checked out by an off road shop before buying it.

Q: Can you use a hard top from a Wrangler YJ on a 1982 Jeep CJ7?

A: Where is everybody getting this info that the CJ7 and the YJ are different lengths? The answer is yes you can swap them but the tailgate different so you might have to install the lifgat from a CJ7. Also the doors might need readjustment to line up properly. In the end measure everything. If it seems like too much work, don't do it.

Q: Is there a coil-over kit for a Jeep CJ7?
My Jeep starting leaning to the driver's side some. After looking - My coil spring on that side is missing! Would a coil-over kit work? Couls I use it all around the Jeep? Is there any other way to fix this?

A: Black Diamond has/had a kit called the XCL I believe, that should work. Even if its for a YJ it should work for a CJ with perhaps only minor changes. Also, pick up an off road mag.. Peterson's 4wheel and off road, Off Road, Four Wheeler, JP, etc...

You should find an ad in there for the coil over conversion kits.

Q: 1980 CJ7 Jeep back seat?
I was wondering is there a bracket or conversion kit that will make it possible to make the rear seat detachable and put back in easily like they have in some vans they have a bar that you can pull up and you can pull out the hole seat im looking for something like this for a CJ7 jeep so if I don’t have a lot of passages I can use it more like a truck and hull stuff do they have a product Im looking for if so were

A: This can be done, but you will need an old sliding seat from a junk yard and make sure it has the top and bottom sliders, you will have to hire a welder to cut your old brackets and mounts off of your seat and weld the sliders on the bottom of your jeep seat. Then drill the 4 holes to mount it in the jeep, pretty simple really.I have done something very similar so I know it can be done.
I am a welder and would charge about $100 bucks to do it if you removed the seat and I did the rest.
You have a great idea here! I do not know of any aftermarket item like this...you might be on to something here :-)
good luck!

Q: How much is my 81 cj7 jeep worth? Please need help quick?
I have a 1981 cj7 jeep its a 4x4 4 cyl. its in ok shape. It uses no oil, it has a bikini top and full soft top with it, the fuel gage don't work and the wind shield wipers don't work, The tires are good on it, and there is something wrong with the choke on it, it takes it a while to open up and start idling right but after it has warmed up its ok, It also has 109 thousand miles on it. Could you please help me out with how much this jeep would be worth if I was to buy it. And I live in Tennesse if that can hurt or help the price when buying. Thanks for your time.

A: Dear Zach,
My Great Uncle Laures used to own a CJ-7, but it was a 1984. But anyways. I did a little research and found that your car if in decent condition should be worth about $3,995, obviously if it has 109,000 miles on it, that would detract from the value a lot. And living in Tennessee hurts you, helps the seller, because prices of "investments" are more expensive their, notice the home prices in Brentwood, Tennessee, a town of 25,000 people, a median house is around $525,000, and in a town of 25,000 people, such as Galesburg, Illinois, an average house is $74,000. So you see it's definitely a sellers market down there. I would ask no more than $2,900 to be fair. Thanks. Hope I was of service.

Sincerely,
Mr. Seth Dylan

Q: 1983 Jeep Wrangler CJ7?
One of my friends has 2 Jeep wranglers and is getting rid of his '83 CJ7 for 1000. It needs a fuel pump and a new battery. It has 95k miles on it and hes throwing in the hard and soft top with new wheels. Trans= auto. Should I get it? I need a car for every day use (to h.s and back) and occasional off roading.

A: a fuel pump and battery??? thats all it needs????? what are you waiting for?? thats a massive deal. I bought a 87 YJ for $1000 and I WISH all i had to replace was the fuel pump and battery, but those were the two smallest of my problems. If i were you, I'd snatch it up in a heart beat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Q: advice for a jeep cj7 ?
if I were to use it for mostly just off-roading

What size suspension lift is most convenient?

A: define off-roading? Corn-fields or mountain trails? water or no water? Cornfields and easy mountaint trails - 1-4 inch, extreme rough country mountains with steep climbs, extended wheelbase with 6-12 inch lift. Always some things to consider though. 6 inch lift will begin to make your cj extremely top heavy unless you have fiberglass tub. 6-12 inch lift needs to be extremely flexible, not just throwing in more springs. Much more info available if you specify what you want in offroading experience.

Q: How do I sell a Jeep that I own but is 80 miles away? ?
I own a 1985 CJ7 Jeep Renegade that I used to take camping and four wheel drive trips in. It has air lockers, a 4 1/2 lift, mud tires, etc. I bought a bolt on kit to convert the jeep from a carborator to fuel injection system, but then this project was stopped in its tracks by a divorce in which I needed to leave my jeep at my ex's house as I moved out to a different city with no room or time to complete the project. Now my jeep is just sitting in a garage 80 miles away and I am not sure how can sell it. There is no place to tow it to and no budget for that. My ex is cooperative and does not care that the jeep remains in his garage and it is clearly and legally mine and registered in my name only. I just don't want it to sit there and would like someone to get some use out of it. Anyone have any suggestions how to deal with this situation or how much to ask for. Since my project was interrupted, the jeep is not running currently, but someone who knows what they are doing should be able to get it running quickly. It has 90,000 miles on it. Thanks for your imput!

A: sounds like something i may be interested in to buy... where is it? ill make you an offer based on how far i have to travel to get it... is there rust on it?

Q: who built 258 cu. in. (4.2L) I-6 for AMC?
i have noticed that amc didnt build all their engines. i have an 85 jeep cj7 and looking for an easier way to buy parts used

A: American motors :)

Q: 1984 CJ7 4.2L 258 straight 6..changing from plastic valve cover to aluminum?
the website i had ordered the valve cover states that there needs to be a slight modification the the head and also says "two rocker arm bridges" need used. I have been told there is a stud that needs removed but I havent heard about any other hardware being needed. Jeep guru's please help i need to do this now!

A: go to www.jeepforum.com/forum, there is a group of guys (my husband and his family are part of it) that are in the 258 section, they will be able to tell you more of what you will need to do, and what you will need to add or remove before installation. I dont know all the facts or information on this swap, my 258 already had an aluminum valve cover on it when i bought my jeep. I hope that helps and you find your answer

Good luck

Q: No spark past distributor?
I thought it was the coil but I still can't get my engine to fire after replacing the coil. I used a volt meter and followed the electricity all the way to the distributor. There is spark giong into the cap, but none coming out of the spark plug wires. I'm at a loss, what could this be? I cleaned all the connections in the distributor and still nothing. Its a 81 jeep CJ7

A: try replacing cap and rotor.good luck.

Q: What transmission should I use in my small block mopar powered jeep? looking for a 4 speed with granny gear.?
Putting in a 1974 360 in my 1984 CJ7. I have a dana 300 transfer case that I'm using and am looking for a 4 speed with granny to replace the 727TF that came with the motor. Having a real hard time finding a Dodge np435 trans so I was wondering what other options I have. Really looking for something that bolts right up cause I can't swing extra cash for adapters.

A: Check into a T18 4 speed with granny 1st
